The Background:
The hook (talk about the topic in general<a background>)
Start broadly with the topic, narrow down the issue to a focused thesis statement
Writing a literary analysis, the background should be the only place you give a summary in two or three sentences.
DON'T SUMMARIZE ANYWHERE IN THE BODY PARAGRAPHS
When responding to a piece of literature mention the author and title in one sentence as a portion of a bigger, meaningful sentence.
-underline for novels or plays
-quotation marks for poems and short stories
The Thesis:
The thesis statement is the most important part of a persuasive essay. THE THESIS STATEMENT TELLS WHAT POSITION YOU ARE TAKING ON AN ISSUE. If you don't take a clear position, then you don't have anything to persuade the reader about.
