Two Minute Affirmation: “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” - Walt Disney Taking action is the key to getting effective results. Talking about something won’t get one anywhere. Rather than talking about working on my studies or cleaning my room, I should just quit pondering upon that thought and just do it! THAT’S RIGHT! Doing vocab exercises are quick and easy.
YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO WRITE A SENTENCE ABOUT COMING TO CLASS ON TIME.

The author adds drama and atmosphere bye weaving in a noticeable amount of Gothic details within the setting and plot. Among the Gothic elements in To Kill a Mockingbird are the irregular snowfall, the tragic fire that left Miss Maudie’s house in ruins, Boo Radley being suspected by the children, the insane dog Atticus murders with bullets, and the mysterious night of the Halloween party on which Bob Ewell assails the children.

Changing Industrial Structure: from Agriculture to Manufacturing/from Light industry to Heavy and Chemical Industry
From the 1960’s to 2003, the industrial structure in Korea has changed tremendously. In the 1960’s and 1970’s the agriculture was very high but soon lowered to a mere 2.8% in exportation. This was probably due to to the fact that new innovations in technology were emerging. Heavy and chemical industry was nothing in 1960 but had slowly begun to rise to 50% in the early 1980’s and soon rose to a staggering 84.8%. Heavy and chemical industry rose in popularity.

September 30 Had Lohan quit drugs, she would have been released from jail.
September 28 If I had done my homework last night, I would have the highest grade in the class. If he had done his practice drills for guitar, he would have passed the audition. If she had done her planning beforehand, she would have been more organized. If Lindsay Lohan had stayed away from drugs, she wouldn’t have gone to jail. The eerie ghost story freaked me out. The shepherd goaded the goats with a stick. I don’t mean to intrude, but there has been a big accident. The nocturnal owl hunts at night. Socretes: -Greek philosopher -taught children philosophy -sentenced to death because what he was teaching is against the society’s point of view -didn’t even try to escape, just faced death as it was Socretes was a Greek philosopher who taught children about his beliefs. The society was against the teachings of Socretes, therefore, this man was put to death. He did not escape when he had the chance. He figured that it was honorable to accept the civil consequences. Everyone has to take responsibilites of their actions.
Plato: -student of Socretes -believed that there exists a perfect idea of objects apart from the physical -for him, there was a physical world and a idea world
-allegory of the cave- symbolic story of people living in a cave, send a person out to see the real world, and when the person comes back and tells the people about the real world, they don’t want to believe him and try to kill him. -Republic: advocates eugenics- trying to make a perfect society of high class peoples
Plato was a student of Socretes. He believed that there was a perfect idea world apart from the physical world (maybe having a previous life as another being or “thing”). Allegory of the cave is a story where people live in a cave, thinking that is the only world there is. They send out a man the the outside (real) world, and the man comes back to describe the outside world. The people try to kill him because they don’t want to believe that there is another world.
Descartes: -believes that all things are dubitable except one idea that is indubitable -Cogito ergo sum- I think, therefore i exist. (i think therefore i am) -we can be in a dream right now, but if i am doubting, i am thinking -thinking cannot be imagined, there is a being thinking in this universe
Descartes was a man who believed that all things can be doubted, but there is one idea existing that is indubitable. Cogito ergo sum means “I think, therefore I am.” If one is doubting being in a dream, they probably aren’t in a dream because they are thinking. Thinking is not possible when dreaming, there is certainly an existing being on this universe pondering about that doubt.
Hume: -causation or coincidence? -knowledge is based on sensory observation -we can observe events, but not causation -we saw the event happening, but we cannot know for sure -we cannot see of observe or see causation, but we can assume or guess the causation
Hume believed that there is no way of knowing if an event happened with causation or coincidence. There can be an assumption of what caused the outcome of a situation, but it could be a coincidence that led to the outcome also. A man slapping another man, and the man falling over and dying can be a coincidence. The man just happened to die at that moment due to other circumstances that caused the death or it could be assumed that the cause of the death was because of the slap.

It should be fine for the Islamic people to build a mosque where ever they want to because America allows freedom of religion. The problem is that others are disturbing them with their complaints and strikes. [You should just explain why you think they should be allowed to build near ground zero.]
Toys shouldn’t be used to entice children. Commercials should be filled with information about the food for the good of public health. Ads should tell people that their foods “may cause” obesity or cancer.
It should not be allowed to have marijuana on tv because it leads both children and adults to think that marijuana is actually a positive thing. This will all lead to people sneaking away with this drug, abusing it, and not getting caught with it illegally.

October 26 Success is better than failure in many ways, but that is not the whole truth. There is such a thing called disastrous success. When one becomes too successful, their world revolves around that wonderful success. That wonderful world of theirs becomes their only world and soon, a horrid disaster follows. History, literature, and movies show some examples of success gone wrong.
There are many books that shows how success can be disastrous. One of the books is Animal Farm. In Animal Farm it talks about these farm animals taking control of other farm animals. The pigs succeed in taking over the farm thinking they can do better than man, but it turns disastrous because the pigs turn into men. This showed how after the pigs succeeded it turned into disaster. In a book called A Brave New World, there is also a success that turns into disaster. After this main character succeeds in going over to the brave new world, he realizes his success was a disaster. At that place he sees his mother die in a cruel way and sees the people having no freedom over their lives. Both these books demonstrate how successes turned into disaster. Not only are successes that turn into disaster in fictional books, but also in real life. China and Michael Jackson are the examples that became successful, but also became disastrous. China is one of the world’s largest manufacturers in the world, making them successful in their overall economy. But there has been a disaster to this. China has become one of the most polluted countries in the world because of their overpopulated population and many factories. It is easy to see how the success in China has also brought disaster to their country. Michael Jackson is one of the many singers that had success being disastrous to them. Michael Jackson was a well known and popular singer who made a ton of money by being successful in his musical career. But in the end he went mad and started becoming a disaster. He didn’t eat anything but pills and changed his skin color with a bunch of plastic surgery. His success made him die in the end, a disastrous ending. Books and the things in real life have examples of how success can lead to disasters.
October 14 Essay Question: Can success be disastrous? -negative and positive Ex: Animal Farm, Invisible Man
October 12 Her hardest hue to hold- alliteration So Eden sank to grief- allusion So Dawn goes down to day- alliteration
The second line uses an alliteration of the “H” sound. The “H” sound gives a feeling of someone running out of breath.
In line seven, the phrase “So dawn goes down to day uses an alliteration of the “D” sound. The D sounds like a heartbeat, the blood valves opening and closing, making a slow thumping rhythm that indicates time passing beat by beat.
The police officer’s abuse of authority was completely unjustifiable. He invaded the boys right to privacy, violated personal rights, and disregarded the sactity of the home responsibility of a parent
CE: A father threatens kids in a school bus for bullying his handicapped daughter. -extent of parental protection -justifiable use of force -parental rights -protection of children from children -duties of the school staff
CE: partents get into a brawl over a scuffle in a kiddie football league game. -overzealous parents -role models -teaching responsible behavior
Lesson 28:
October 7 A dream deferred dries up like a “raisin in the sun.” The tactile imagery is used in a way that shows gives the image of uncomfortable heat and dryness.
A dream deferred “festers like a sore,” slowly growing with puss slowly oozing out of the rotting wound. This gives an unpleasant image of decay, the dream is utterly ruined with a graphic visual.
A dream deferred “stinks like rotten meat,” the meat giving off a horrible stench of a dead carcass. This gives an olfactory imagery of slow decay of meat covered with fungus and disgust.
A dream deferred “explodes,” booming with thunderous roars. This is an auditory imagery of violent destruction, the dream being bombed by terrorists during a raging storm.
October 5 It behooves (us/you/them) to... [ought to/ should] It behooves us to pursue our dreams. It behooves the leaders of society to change the world. It behooves them to think outside of the box. It behooves me to make high goals for myself. It behooves scientists to find more cures for diseases.

NEWSY:11.15.10- Facebook’s new messaging system: Facebook launched a new system- facebook e-mail. This email is said to be the “g-mail killer”. This email is a convergence system that handles messages seamlessly across the different ways that you want to communicate. This new technology allows people to communicate online in so many ways (sharing videos, pictures, comments) and it is so easy to use. Although this system seems like a huge innovation in technology, it probably isn’t going to be used professionally. This is because many companies banned facebook for being a time-waster and a potential security threat. Despite the huge anticipation, facebook says that F-mail will not revolutionize e-mail or replace g-mail. I think this new f-mail is going to be very popular amongst teens and college students, but only them. Facebook is already mostly popular with this age group and since there are security threats and distractions, facebook is already banned from most corporate settings. I don’t think there will be many people using this e-mail because it’s just a hassle to keep track of all these accounts and although it’s easy to access, it’s easier to stick with what they already have. Will people have to make a separate account for f-mail if they already have a facebook account? How many people will actually use this program as their main e-mail? Does it have all the regular functions of an email? Would more people use f-mail rather than just commenting or posting?
11.16.10- Not So Green: Lead Found in Reusable Grocery Bags High levels of lead were found in reusable grocery bags. These bags are possibly dangerous. The New York Senator is blaming China. These “lead bags” are not going to be transmitted into the contents of the bag. The material of the bag does not flake off easily, but over time, the fibers break down and there is a possibility of lead going into your groceries. This can cause learning disabilities in children and fertility problem in adults. There is no safe level of lead, for lead itself is toxic. Some people aren’t discouraged by this blow. I don’t like the fact that this green movement may not be so green after all. The senator shouldn’t be blaming China, because what if the contents of lead were from American material? I’m worried about the health risks of these bags. Children’s learning abilities and many other health problems are at risk. All in all, this was a big disappointment and I don’t think I’ll be able to trust other green movements. Was there any part of the process where these bags were checked for safety? Where did the lead in the the bags come from? Was anyone physically affected by the lead in the bags? Will the sales of the reusable bags be stopped? Will people buy these bags anymore? 11.17.10- Deadly Shanghai Fire Raises Fire Control Concerns A devastating fire destroys an apartment building in Shanghai. At least 53 people were killed, and 70 others were injured. This fire occurred just a few days after China’s national fire fighting day, where exercises are held nationwide. The rescue was a long and hard process because of the lack of state of the art equipment. The building was under renovation at the time and made it harder to rescue. Families of victims says that the Beijing government should share some blame. This fire highlighted an even bigger problem of high-rise structure fires. It will be hard to put out this kind of fire in these buildings and will also be hard to rescue. Investigators say that the fire was caused by mistakes from welders. There are eight suspects that were taken into custody. This is a very devastating event that should make everyone aware of the dangers of fires. I feel great sympathy toward the fire victims and their family. Why would this fire occur when there was a fire awareness exercise just a few days before? Many people do not understand that importance of safety drills because their logic is that the chance of a disaster happening to them is a one-in-a-million chance. The equipment that firefighters use should be modified to rescue people from these tall buildings because if not, how are they going to rescue people from the 50th floor? We should all be careful of disasters and not make careless mistakes. Was there a way to have prevented this fire? How long did this fire last? Did the fire engulf all the floors of the building? If the firefighters had better equipments, would more people be alive right now? Was this fire intentional or unintentional? 11.18.10- Pregnant Smokers Linked to ‘Criminal’ Offspring It is a known fact that smoking during pregnancy can harm the offspring’s health. A recent study now says that people whose mothers puff a pack a day are more likely to become offenders when they grow up. In this study, it is known that mothers who smoke tend to have a low social status. Whether this is true or not, smoking during pregnancy causes multiple health problems in the baby. It is a possibility that smoking during pregnancy can lead to criminal children, but I don’t really think that’s necessarily true. People recognize a smoker to be maybe have social status disadvantages, but that doesn’t mean that all children become criminals because of this. Also, there really isn’t much scientific solid evidence to support this study. Can these affects on babies also come from secondhand smoke? 11.24.10- TSA Pat-Down: Are They Really That Bad? These days, headlines are hyped with tales of passenger horror and humiliation. 64 percent of Americans support TSA body scanners and 48 percent say the pat-downs are justified. A man says that Americans are unjustifiably being tricked into giving up more and more of their personal privacy in the name of “terrorist exploitation”. Even with the new rules for pat-downs, a man got at least one item of contraband through. Pat-downs sure are aggressive these days. I would prefer going through a full body scan than be pat down. If a TSA agent were to touch me in uncomfortable areas, how would I know if they are doing their job or taking advantage of the situation and manipulating me? I can understand why people were offended by the experience of being touched all over, but I guess procedures are procedures. What is “going over the line” in pat-downs? How many people passed through pat-downs with an item of contraband? How many people were caught with an item of contraband? Is there any better security system other than the current system?
November 16 Roe V. Wade- Supreme court case that decided the act of abortion to be legal liberal: pro-choice conservative: pro-life
The moral status of a fetus: Is the fetus a person? At what stage in its development does it become a person? Conception? 1st trimester? Birth? Fact: one can go through voluntary abortion ONLY in the first trimester of pregnancy. After the first trimester, the fetus starts to take form of a human-therefore, one cannot voluntarily go through abortion (unless the baby threatens another life) The rights of a pregnant woman: Does the pregnant woman have the right to decide is she is going to carry the baby to term or not? -Right to privacy -this is the right specified in Roe v. Wade -Right to ownership of one’s own body -is ownership a perspicuous category? -Right to equal treatment -men can’t get pregnant -Right to self-determination -women have the right to decide about their own futures -it is morally repellent to force a woman to bear a child against her will The central argument: P1: The fetus is an innocent person P2: it is morally wrong to end the life of an innocent person -Main point: IS the fetus really a person?
Keeping a common ground: -Reducing unwanted pregnancies -But: disagreement about the means -Guaranteeing genuinely free and informed choice -Providing a loving home for all children
China- only 1 child per family-> boys and girls are same Korea- 2 children-1 child---> 2 children (because low population)
Euthanasia- Right to kill someone that is already dying
November 9 NEWSY: 11.9.10- Georgia teen stomped to death at party A 18 year old by the name of Bobby Tillman was beaten to death at a party on Sunday morning. The teen was beaten up while there were 57 people who stood by and didn’t react to the situation. About 60 people were taken by bus to the police station- they had just witnessed a murder. The party started with a girl and about ten of her friends, but the party got much bigger than intended. Four teens have been arrested for the murder. This event was a very unfortunate and horrific happening. I think people these days do wild things to stand out from the crowd or grab attention. It is wrong for the 60 people standing by to not do anything whatsoever about the situation and watch a poor guy get beaten up for no reason. Violence is growing in a very negative way and people just can’t control themselves. I can’t believe the witnesses did not do anything to stop the beating. Why didn’t the people watching the violent act do anything to stop this violence? Why did the person (people) beat up the 18 year old in the first place? Where were the owners of the house during this party? How did all the people (other than the original girl and friends) know about this party?

November 4 newsy.com -one news item per day 1. summary paragraph 2. commentary paragraph 3. questions NEWSY: 11.4.10- San Fransisco passes happy meal ban: The San Fransisco board of supervisors passed a vote that bans toys in unhealthy fast food meals. These meals now require any meal with toys to have certain nutritional requirements for fruit, vegetable, and multi-grain content. Some parents are upset over the issue because they say that they can control their own children’s eating habits. I think this passing of vote is great because children are really eating unhealthy these days. Toys lure the children into eating unhealthy foods, and it’s great to know that kids can eat healthier even at fast food places. Although it is true that parents can control their children’s diet, some adults may not have healthy eating habits. What exactly are the nutritional contents of happy meal? Are the toys actually the bait for luring in customers? Is this change going to affect the sales of McDonald meals? Is this ban also for other fast food places that include toys with meals?
