Socrates was a Greek philosopher, who said that people should follow the law, if you accept the benefits of a society. Therefore, even if the government does something unjust, if people get the benefits of the society.

advocated eugenics
Plato was the student of Socrates, and he tried to think of an idea to make a perfect society. He believed that a perfect society would need different classes. He advocated eugenics for each of these classes, so people in these classes would be borned to be in them. He also believed that what people think is true isn’t true, because what they see is just shadow of what really is going on

Descartes
all things are dubitable except Gogito ergo sum
Cogito ergo sum
I think therefore I am
needs to reason things out, and when we do that, some things are not true, when we reason them out.
what we see is like real, but it’s like dream, so we have to reason to find truth
tries to prove existence of God
Descartes’s philosophy is somewhat similar to Plato in that he says that everything is dubitable except that “Cogito ergo sum”, which means “I think therefore I am”. Thus in his philosophy, everything that we go through, is like dream, and we have to think through everything to prove if it is real or not.
Hume
causation or coincidence?
Knowledge is based on sensory observation
we’re limited to what we see about the world, so it’s pointless to think through them
we can’t observe the causations between things
Hume basically disagreed with all the other philosophers. He thought that our knowledge is limited to what we can only observe. He thought that what we think are the causation might be just a coincidence, and we will never know about them.

No drugs other than over the counter drugs should be advertised on T.V. Medical marijuana shouldn’t be advertised on T.V even for medical purposes. It is the doctor’s decision whether to use it on the patient or not. If medical marijuana is advertised, then there are other drugs such as Morphine that try to be advertised on T.V.
Dr.Laura shouldn’t be fired because she was just quoting and not applying the word. Quoting the word is not using the word, and firing her because of this would means that many movies with these words should be banned.
Toys and Happy Meals should be allowed because they are just marketing strategies. If the toys and Happy Meals are going to be banned, then that means that the government can ban any other marketing strategies, thus becoming a paternalistic government. The danger for paternalistic government is that it threatens capitalism. In capitalism, private businesses can use different strategies to increase their profit, but as the government interferes more and more, private businesses will lose more rights, and capitalism will fade.
Building mosque near ground zero should be allowed. The terrorists who attacked the World Trade Centers don’t represent every Muslims or Islam. I think it is not logical to not allow building the Mosque is just a making a decision based on stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists.

I think pre-emptive attack is justifiable, because war is a fight between countries, and there are no rules in fighting. Also, when people start fighting, they don’t tell their enemies that they are going to attack them, they just attack, so I think even declaring war is unnecessary.
In Iraq, there are three groups: sunni, shiites, and kurds. Before the U.S troops went in, the Sunnis who were the minorities were in charge of the government. However, because Shiites are the majority of the country, they are now in charge of the government because the government is now democratic.

Status quo-current condition way things are.
Compared to the young generation, the old generation wants status quo
In terms of legalizing gay marriage, most Christians want status quo.
There are parts of life which are inevitable, and change is one of them. There are many forms of changes such as adapting to the situation given to the person. I think the motivation change comes from outside, because the people get lazy when everything is perfect, and inspirations motivate people to change.
I think it’s humans’ instinct to be lazy when everything is going perfect, therefore there has to be motivation from outside in order to change. Theory of evolution is very similar to this idea. When animals are perfectly adapted to the environment and the environment is never changing, they will never evolute and adapt to the environment because there is no need to. Since humans are also animals, they will also never change if their environment or surroundings are not. Also, this is why rivalries and competitions are very important. Compared to when a person is just best at something and when he has a rival, the person with rival would make a bigger improvement and change, because he will be motivated that if he does not work harder, then he will lose. The laziness of people will make them to stay and not change when there are no pressures from outside, but when their environment changes, they will have no choice but to change with it.
Inspirations are also great motivations and they come from outside. When a person gets an inspiration of something he wants to do, it never just comes out of nowhere and just inspires him. Inspiration always comes from outside of the person and motivates him. Good sources of inspirations are inspirational movies, life stories of successful people, and inspirational stories. For example, when a person reads life stories of successful people, he would think that he would like to be a person in the story, thus inspiring and motivating to change. Inspiration is always a big factor in motivating people, and it always comes from outside, not inside.
I think motivation for change comes from outside because people are lazy and won’t change without their environments changing, and also because inspirations play a big part in motivating people to change and they always come from outside. For me, when I first came to United States, I became more active, because the culture of U.S was different from Korean culture.
